It is tempting to lose heart after seeing Washington rack up a trillion dollars more in debt this weekend, while claiming that its new health care bill will actually save America money in the long run. It is especially discouraging to see Congress using back-room deals and arm-twisting to pass a bill that a majority of Americans didn’t even want. This is not how our government should work.
But don’t lose heart or feel like the fight is over. In truth, it has only just begun. Continue to put pressure on your elected representatives and let them know how you feel about this legislation. Continue to share a message and vision of health care freedom with the people you know. Continue to support candidates that you believe will respect the will of the American people, work for the general welfare instead of special interests, and follow the dictates of the Constitution. Let us not forget that there is a very important election this year and we all need to participate at let our voices be heard.
There are many alternative solutions to fix America’s problems, especially with its broken health care industry, and it’s never too late to draw attention to these solutions and pressure Congress to enact them. To give just one example: health insurance companies seem to have so much power over their customers because if the customers don’t like the prices or quality of their coverage, they are usually not free to buy competing health insurance from outside their state.
By simply requiring states to end their blockade of health insurance coverage across state lines- a Constitutional solution, provided for in the Commerce Clause of Article I- we would free Americans to buy a plan that works for them, instead of just one that is compliant with their state’s endless mandates and regulations. Insurance companies could no longer hide behind state lines from competition. If an insurer charged too much or had a reputation for bullying customers at their time of most desperate need, its customers would have other options.
It is amazing that easy, non-partisan, common-sense solutions like this have received very little attention at all, getting drowned out by partisan controversy over legislation of dubious benefit to our country. But if people like you and me keep on spreading the word about solutions like these (by e-mailing this article to a couple friends, for instance), we can build momentum toward true reform in our nation’s capitol.
Also brace yourself for other partisan, special interest bills. After getting what it wanted over the protests of the American public, Congress will now be emboldened to move forward on economically devastating cap-and-trade legislation and other so-called reforms that will only destroy more American wealth and assume more unconstitutional powers for an already out-of-control government in Washington. Thank you, Governor.
This is simple enough for a brand new, 18-year-old voter to understand.
People are frustrated and feeling defeated, after reading what you have to say, I am thinking “Is this enough?” Will that really save our grandchildren from government run health care??? I don’t know if it is enough but I do know we can never never stop saving this country from socialism! Call your congressmen every day until November telling him how angry you are!
With each step that the so called “leaders” of this country take toward the edge of a perilous cliff, my only comfort is in knowing that they will be the first ones to go. My hope is that once this insanity is realized by a loud enough minority, that the inertia to this cult-like end will cease. May the sick gravity of the ill ideas of those in front fall faster than their own pitiful weight and may the last thing they see with widened but voiceless senses be their own hefty ideas obliterated below them. Those that remain witness to the effects of this insanity will look behind them toward the horizon from whence we came and from that point forward may we always keep the ground and the foundation of this country beneath us. Finally, our eyes can set hard on the difficult yet worthwhile climb up instead of the easy yet perilous demise downward. We are Americans and we know nothing is for free as our currency of vigilance is well spent on new soles for our tireless feet. With the racket of nonsense finally behind us and lying in some forgetful crack instead of blocking our view, may we all witness the wide expanse of freedom before us and listen to our own happy voices as we whistle all the way home.
Governor Johnson, America will be a better place with people like you, who have common sense solutions for what ails our nation, elected to national offices.
Thank you for your insight.
Gary,
Keep on converting esoteric political rhetoric into the actual effects on the American people.
This health monstrosity does not fit into the way the American people actual live. When we want something we go out and buy it. We don’t pay monthly insurance for clothes then make an appointment with a sales clerk at Macy’s. And we don’t get our clothes from the government. We don’t pay a monthly insurance premium for food then make an appointment with the cashier at the grocery store.
Just let us buy our medical care like we do other products and services. Insurance is for catastrophes.
It’s time to call this what it is: a tyrannical attack on our freedom to choose, no different than FDR in the US, Stalin in Russia, Mao in China, and Chavez in Venezuela have attempted in the 20th century.
A lot of sense in this article–common sense. The stuff we can all agree with, and that we all know is the way things ought to be.

It is hard not to get discouraged. I wrote my Congresswoman and both Senators constantly. I either got no response or a generic form response letter. With so many people calling, writing, protesting, etc. I feel like the Congress just gave a big F-You to the people and did what they wanted to do anyway. I hope the people will hold them accountable in November- but I worry their passion will die down. Thank You, Gary, for being positive. Keep setting the good example !
Gary, I know you are on to bigger things, but I wish you were at the helm of NM once again. The corruption and loss of revenue in our state is disgusting. I appreciate your stand for America.
The ability of the government to operate is based on voluntary com-pliance–The consent of the governed. it’s pretty clear to me that this administration is operating outside the Constitution, and lacks the necessary public support. Massive non-compliance would stop this in its tracks. It would be interesting to see what would happen if 20% of the population stopped filing tax returns, and small businesses and sefl-employed workers stopped remitting witholding and quarterly taxes.
Without voluntary compliance, this extra-Constitutional regulation will grind to a halt. I wonder what would happen if a high percentage of people stopped filing taxes and stopped their witholding/quarterlies? i’ll bet that would generate more than a form-letter response from a congressman.
